Red Screen in Final Cut Pro: Causes & Fixes

What causes a red screen?

A red screen can happen for several different reasons. Below are the most common causes:

  • FxPlug apps didn’t launch properly
A system glitch, macOS update, or Final Cut Pro update can prevent required FxPlug apps from running.
  • Missing FxPlug components
Some required background applications may not be installed on your system.
  • Compatibility issues
Your version of macOS or Final Cut Pro may not meet the plugin’s minimum requirements.
  • Outdated plugin version
The plugin installed on your system may be an older version.
  • Export-related issues
Sometimes errors during export can cause plugins to stop working until they are relaunched.
  • Using a discontinued plugin version
If your project uses an older version of a plugin that has since been replaced or rebuilt, it may no longer function correctly.

How do I fix a red screen?

Follow the steps below in order. Most issues are resolved within the first few steps.

1. Check system requirements

Start by confirming your system is compatible:

  • Go to the product page
  • Scroll to System Requirements
  • Compare with your current macOS and Final Cut Pro versions

If your system doesn’t meet the requirements, you’ll need to update macOS, Final Cut Pro, or both.

2. Run FxRun (recommended first step)

This is the quickest and most effective fix in most cases.

  • Make sure Final Cut Pro is closed
  • Open the PFS Installer
  • Go to the Account tab
  • Scroll to FxRun
  • Click Run

This will relaunch all installed Pixel Film Studios FxPlug apps.

Once complete:

  • Close any pop-ups
  • Reopen Final Cut Pro
  • Test your plugin

3. Uninstall and reinstall the plugin

If FxRun doesn’t resolve the issue, reinstall the plugin.

Option A: Easy method (recommended)

  • Open the PFS Installer
  • Go to My Downloads
  • Find the plugin
  • Click Uninstall
  • Then click Install

Option B: Manual uninstall

  1. Open Finder and navigate to:

Macintosh HD > Users > [Your User] > Movies > Motion Templates

  2. Open the relevant folders:
    • Titles
    • Generators
    • Effects
    • Transitions
  3. Delete only the folder named:

Pixel Film Studios - [Plugin Name]

⚠️ Important:
Do not delete the main Titles, Generators, Effects, or Transitions folders—only the plugin folder.

After reinstalling

Run FxRun again to ensure all components are properly launched.

What support will need from you

To troubleshoot further, support may check for missing or duplicate FxPlug files. Please send screenshots of the following locations (if they exist):

Tip: Access your hard drive quickly

In Finder, press:
Shift + Command + C

Location 1 (Current)

Macintosh HD → Applications → Pixel Film Studios → Plugins

  • Open the Plugins folder
  • Send a screenshot of its contents

Location 2 (Legacy)

Macintosh HD → Users → [Your User] → Library → PFS → FxPlug

The Library folder is hidden by default. You can access it by:

  • Clicking Go in Finder → hold Option → select Library, or
  • Press Shift + Command + . (period) to show hidden files

Then:

  • Open PFS → FxPlug
  • Send a screenshot (if the folder exists)

Location 3 (Legacy)

Macintosh HD → Library → Plug-Ins → FxPlug

  • Open the FxPlug folder
  • Send a screenshot of its contents

Once these are reviewed, support can confirm whether duplicate or missing files are causing the issue and guide you to the correct solution.
