Why am I getting checkerboard or squares on my timeline/in my export?

You may see  a checkerboard image either in your timeline or in your export for a plugin if your project library is not calling to the correct location in your motion templates.

To solve this issue, go to the Library's settings press Control+Command+J or press File > Library Properties in Final Cut Pro to bring up Library properties. On the right side of Final Cut Pro, click the Modify Settings in the Storage Locations section.

In the Modify Settings options make sure that your "Motion Content" settings are set to "in Motion Templates" and not "in Library." If the settings are incorrect, please change it. This will allow Final Cut Pro to look for the necessary media that is included in the plugins' templates.

After changing the setting, close and relaunch Final Cut Pro. Then, export your media once again. You may also want to try exporting to your desktop instead if you are using an external hard drive. If you are not seeing the media you may need to reinstall the plugin.

After you have reinstalled the plugin, reopen FCP to test. In most cases, the plugin that is already on the timeline should be restored, however, in some cases you may find yourself needing to reapply a new plugin preset to the timeline from your Final Cut Pro libraries.
